DAVE PELZ: Golf Channel's putting & short game guru
PROFILE
INTERVIEW with:

THR: There are people still croquet putting. I played with one out in Portland, an elderly man who had one of Bob Duden's old putters and learned golf from him. If croquet putting were still allowed, which of course it's not, how many top players would you think, would be using it?
Pelz: Jim, I honestly believe every one of them would. I've done a lot of testing on that and it is an easier way to putt. When you stand on the line and you're looking right on the line, and you're hitting the ball from between your legs like a croquet mallet except if you did it with a nice putter with a vertical shaft, there's no wrist break involved. There's no rotation of the forearms. You see the line that the ball starts on. In present day golf, when you stand on the side of the line, that's one of the things that makes the game difficult and preserves the challenge. You don't see what line the ball starts on. When you look up, you don't see the ball until it's about six feet away from you so you don't know exactly what line you started on. You just have to assume. When you croquet putt you can see it.
In a way, I felt very sorry when they did outlaw Bobby Shave and Bob Duden and the players who were really good at croquet putting because they ruined their golf careers in terms of being able to make money and win. It [banning] did preserve the style of the game that we play. It kept the challenge in there. You know we don't want to go around and putt balls in slingshots and shoot them like bows and arrows. That would be too easy.
How many top players would croquet putt, if they could? Every one of them.
Looks like Pelz missed on this one since (legal) "sidesaddle" has proven to be even better than croquet but most pros have chosen either to ignore or dismiss it. Actually, Pelz now encourages (legal) "sidesaddle" as the simplest and easiest putting technique in his extensive book "the Putting Bible".
~the Putt Guru
And, so who am I?
I'm 72 with bone-on-bone arthritic knees and the upper body of a 12 year old girl. Can barely hit a tee ball 200 yds. A really lazy green reader with no discipline for putting routines. Never practice putting except for a couple of putts on the practice green before I tee off. I Play on a course with one of the most difficult set of greens in the Las Vegas area. (Dorango Hills) But my total putts are nearly always in the twenties. (Don't hit many greens but get it up and down often... lots of one putts.) Rarely 3 putt and continue to be one of the best putters of my many playing partners. And now with the new
"AUT-O-SIGHT" it's unreal.
Anyone willing to put in a normal amount of practice and discipline with sidesaddle would elevate their putting to a whole new level... Even quicker with the "AUT-O-SIGHT".

Sidesaddle not as silly as it seems
By JAMES ACHENBACH
Senior Writer
LAS VEGAS In my role as Putter Detective, I am here to investigate a putting method that doesnt require manipulation of the blade during the putting stroke. Most of the time its called sidesaddle, because that was the name used by its most famous advocate, Sam Snead.
One of golfs most endearing characters, 72-year-old Las Vegas resident Karl Higham
has been using and teaching the sidesaddle method longer than most golfers have been alive.
Once upon a time, putting may have been a simple art. Today, though, golfers have become like Indiana Jones in their search for the mysterious path of the perfect putting stroke. It may be open-to-closed, closed-to-open or loop-to-loop. The quest continues.
Why has putting become so complicated? Many golfers are so consumed by the path
of the putter head that they forget about puttings most important element rhythm.
Listen to any televised golf tournament, and youre sure to hear at least one broadcaster talk about Bobby Locke or Stan Utley and the art of hooking putts (opening the face on the backswing, then closing it near impact so that the toe appears to turn over in a hook stroke).
Hooking putts? Youve got to be kidding. Ill take a hooked tee shot, but putts are something I want to hit straight.
Which brings me back to Higham, who still teaches the same method he has used for more than 50 years. The golfer faces the hole and uses a croquet-style stroke with
the ball to the side of the body.
Picture yourself rolling a golf ball (with your hand) to the hole, says Higham, who designs his own putters. Its a simple underhanded toss. So your first assignment here is to quit thinking. If I asked you to roll a ball, would you go through all this mental stuff? Of course not.
Higham began putting this way while attending high school in Long Beach, Calif. Adjacent to Woodrow Wilson High was Recreation Park, with an 18-hole course. Across the street was a nine-hole layout.
Before he ever played the game, Higham earned spending money as a caddie. One day he saw a man putting between his legs with a putter that looked like a croquet mallet.
He was making putts from everywhere, Higham recalls, so I decided to make myself one of those. I had never even owned a golf club.
Soon, according to Higham, he made more money on the putting green than he did caddying.
The croquet putter was introduced to the PGA Tour by Bob Duden, who was so fond of the method that he began manufacturing croquet putters named The Dude.
Duden and Snead were buddies, so Snead tried it, liked it and won a handful of Tour events using this style. In 1968, the U.S. Golf Association outlawed croquet putting, which drove Duden out of business.
Late in his career, Duden was the best 70-year-old golfer I ever saw. Until he died in 1995 at age 74, he was a threat to break par in money games at Rose City Golf Course in Portland, Ore.
Some Duden loyalists in Oregon still use the putters, voicing an odd desire that their approach shots stop on the fringe so they can putt between their legs. This style
is legal off the green, but not on the putting surface.
Snead, too, switched to sidesaddle. Nobody on todays Tour uses the method. Its their loss.
Higham remains the high priest of the sidesaddle world. His quirky Web site (www.puttmagic.com) is a meandering testament to the history and theory of sidesaddle putting.
The length of sidesaddle putters varies from medium to long. Whatever the length, Higham tells golfers never to bend the elbow of the lower arm. The hand of the lower arm should be placed on the grip in a natural position. To determine this position, point the index finger of your dominant hand toward a target and carefully note the position of all your fingers.
Long putters and sidesaddle putters have the same lie angle, which is mandated by the rules to be a minimum of 10 degrees. No putter can have a shaft that is straight up and down.
I took a long putter from Never Compromise and turned it into a sidesaddle putter simply by changing the position of the lower grip. Its fun to use.
Its an abomination if you putt any other way, Higham says. It will even help you get rid of the yips.
Careful, Karl.
Karl Higham

CONSIDER THIS THE NEXT TIME YOU GO PUTTER SHOPPING:
Putter manufacturers want you to believe that design and technology can solve your putting woes if you're willing to pay enough for it. It actually has had less than 1% effectiveness based on the average golfer's putts per round since 1985... probably due to better green conditions.
You can hold your putter upside-down and make putts if you can release it down the proper line with the right pace...
...But I guess you already knew that if you have more than a couple of putters in your collection.
It's a desperate, but failed, attempt to overcome the real problem of the conventional putting technique requiring difficult skills that are foreign to all of our natural and intuitive instincts.
Here's just one of dozens training aids designed to help keep the entire upper torso, arms & hands together while stroking a putt from a conventional setup. Although good direction is certainly problematic from this position , trying to learn pace with all these body parts in play requires an enormous amount of practice, discipline & skill.
It's all about skill & technique! So if you lack the skill, simply change your technique.
Subjective Reasoning Trap
The only reason people don't putt sidesaddle....
....Other people don't putt sidesaddle!
That goes for everybody... including professionals.
The Saddest Commentary of All
Tens of thousands of "yippers" out there have given the game up out of frustration and may never discover this 100% cure. Plus the ones still playing way below their potential who refuse to switch to the sidesaddle method simply because their misguided egos stand in their way.
"Doing the same thing over and over again with the same negative results is a form of insanity."
~ Albert Einstein
The issue is never whether it works or not,
but will always come down to this...
The Real "Gut Check" Question:
Would you actually be willing to putt in this unusual fashion if you knew absolutely that it improved your results dramatically?
If you can honestly answer yes to that question, you have taken the most important first step to becoming the envy of your peers on the green...a really great putter of the golf ball.
SCIENTIFICALLY DOCUMENTED FACT:
You will NEVER achieve your full potential as a putter of the golf ball while standing at a right angle to your target line.

HUNTINGTON -- Gary McCord grabbed the audience's attention Sunday night at the Huntington Classic's pairings party with his renowned humor-based story telling.

He held the attention of the players on the practice green at Guyan Golf and Country Club with an invention of sorts. During his casual clinic, McCord unveiled a new putter and style that the golf world will see this weekend when he competes in a Champions Tour event, the 3M Championship in Blaine, Minn. (Chapter 3 - The Putting Bible)
Golf Digest December 2005:
Forgotten amid the huge variety of putting grips, stances and strokes is the sidesaddle method Sam Snead used in the latter part of his career.
Curtis Strange says he's thinking about using it on the Champions Tour, but frankly I'm surprised no one has put it into play already, because it's a terrific way to putt.
"The sidesaddle method is as close to a perfect pendulum stroke as you can get, a straight-back, straight-through motion that is easy to repeat." "It's hard for the face of the putter to twist away from square, and there is no breaking of the wrists." "And it's the only method where you look down the line of play with your eyes level with the horizon". "With this "triangulated" vision perspective, it's easy to see the line." "One day soon, someone is going to adopt Sam's style, and when that happens, a long line of imitators will surely follow."

This is how I putt. I went to putting sidesaddle about 8 months ago. I use a putter from puttmagic.com. The reverse shafted putter is really awesome.
Bunk? Not for this guy. I've make more long putts now than I ever did before. I've already made 4 birdies this year - last year I didn't make a single one.
For me, it's about the speed of the putt. My problem putting with a traditional stance and my old Titleist putter was judging speed. I was constantly leaving putts six feet short or blowing it six feet past. I'd get over the ball and just have no idea how hard to hit it... pretty miserable. Being able to look at the hole with both eyes has dramatically reduced that problem for me. Now I'm confident standing over 4 footers, and long putts have a chance to go in.
I spent all of last year trying to break 90 and failing. This year 3 of my last 4 rounds have been in the 80s. My ball striking has improved a bit, but I attribute most of my better scoring to an improved short game and my sidesaddle putter. I just love seeing those putts drop.
| If you are still using a conventional putting stance, you're simply making it harder than it has to be. |

WHY DO MOST GOLFERS CONTINUE TO IGNORE THE OBVIOUS?
| ********************************************* |
| The main reasons the long "Broomstick" stroke |
| is more difficult than "Sidesaddle" |
| From this position you must either rock your entire upper torso from |
| side to side while trying to sync your stoke with the right arm |
| unnaturally across your body OR your left hand is forced to |
| struggle to allow a free and steady pivot point since the forearm |
| With the Sidesaddle setup, all that's required is to simply allow your left |
| forearm to rotate at the elbow as a solid pivot point as the right arm |
| executes a more natural back and forth motion using the shoulder as the pivot point... easy to stay still at impact with a more consistent and accurate roll. |
| NO NEED TO GET ANY OTHER BODY PARTS INVOLVED! |
| Aside from the added visual benefit of looking straight down the target line, it's quite obvious that getting the ball rolling quickly on the intended line at the desired pace from this position is far easier and more consistent than any other putting technique. |
Right or Left Eye Dominant?
If you are a right hander with a right dominant eye or a lefty with a left dominant eye, you are at an additional disadvantage to the inherent parallax problem when putting from a conventional setup.... BUT:
| WHEN FACING THE HOLE, HOWEVER, EYE DOMINANCE IS NO LONGER A NEGATIVE FACTOR |

Most FAQ:
Since you have gotten this far, you must have come to one or both of two possible conclusions.
1) I'm convinced sidesaddle is a better way to putt.
and/or
| 2) "If it's all that good, why don't more pros putt this way?" |
| Many of the professionals interviewed asked the same question. |
| Noteworthy: Question (2) is somewhat misleading. |
| Actually, a far, far higher percentage of golf professionals do putt sidesaddle than do amateurs once you include club and teaching PGA members. |
| Nearly half of my orders come from students of club professionals who have convinced them to putt sidesaddle to overcome their putting problems. |

meme(mem) n.
A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another. As insidious as a virus that becomes so ingrained in our thought process that reason and logic are immune to it.
Most of us... including pros and experts are willing slaves to this copy cat form of imitation even though we may intellectually disagree or at least have doubts about the idea or practice.
POPULAR EXCUSE : SENSELESS CONTROVERSY
There are so many top touring pros that think it's unfair and not in the essence of the game, it's obvious the others would be hesitant to offend them. No player wants to beat another using a method that is not generally accepted by most PGA professionals.
Another overlooked factor is since none of the major manufacturers make a sidesaddle putter, most top pros are not willing to the sacrifice lucrative endorsement money to make the switch.
Many "elite" pros even chastise V. J. Singh, Sergio Garcia and others for using belly and long putters.
When some pro with the guts of Sam Snead putts sidesaddle again and has the overall game to win, others will have to follow in order to level the playing field.
There is hope however, look at all the old and new techniques and equipment changes that are being made on tour.. after some other brave (or well paid) pro is willing to try them first, of course!
As the well known golf commentator Peter Kostas remarked on a recent PGA tour broadcast:
"Most professionals are just too embarrassed to try it out."

Sidesaddle Grip...
Face the hole with the ball on the right side of your body. Use your left hand to grip the putter near its top. Place your right hand lower down the putter shaft, palm facing the hole. Bend forward, angling the putter to the right, across the front of your body.
A longer putter can help you use more of your arms and shoulders and less of your hands and wrists during your putts.
MESSAGE FROM BOB:
I have been putting sidesaddle since 4/1/05. I cannot believe the difference. My speed control on long putts is very good and I am making way more putts! TYPICAL.. FIRST TIME OUT
RECEIVED 12/21/06
Hi Karl:
Just thought I'd keep you up to date although you've probably heard it all before.
The Slam Dunk arrived last week and I messed around with it indoors on the carpet trying to get the hang of the new feel.
I was getting pretty good putting at a beer coaster on the carpet and would hit it 9 out of 10 times from about 12 feet.
Then next day off to my first competition round with it. Just like you say, it is a bit difficult introducing a new look to an old mob of golfers. Everyone kidded me about the way I looked putting and I wasn't doing so well on the practice green mostly due to the peer pressure you could sense. Half the people questioned whether it was legal or not.
My regular playing partner said before we hit off, " why don't you just put that thing on Ebay and get rid of it before you look ridiculous."
Our first green is undulating and although I hadn't practiced with the putter with shots just short of, the green I thought I'd give it a go. Wasn't a good shot, left it about 20 ft short of the hole much to everyone's delight and laughter. Still a bit nervous I tried to relax and just let the putter do the work. Rolled staight into the hole so we won hole one. Laughter stopped.
Won't bore you with a hole by hole description, but results for the first time use of your putter were excellent. Never had a 3 putt (which is normally my problem) had 4 one putts and the rest were 2 putts with quite a few close misses. And remember this was my first round with the putter.
Won the money and afterwards, had the same critics come up to me and ask if they could have a try. So although it did seem like a baptism of fire when I first brought the club to our course, I now feel ready to practice and improve with it. It only gets better as you get the hang of it.
Another thing I really liked is there is no feeling of the "yips" when using the putter. With each set up you feel ready to putt and accept the consequences without having a nervous breakdown before making the stroke.
Well off to the club now for Friday's 9 hole chook run. Hopefully we'll have a chicken for dinner tonight.
I'll keep you posted on my success.

Would you want to shop without one of these?
In 1937, a grocery store owner by the name of Silvan Goldman first came up with the idea of the grocery cart after watching his customers struggling with hand held baskets, He had them made and put them in the store but no one would use them... women claiming they were already pushing baby carriages around all day while the men didn't want to look less manly not being able carry around a little basket.
He finally had to actually hire shoppers to go around the store using the carts for months before customers would follow.

As part of the TV commercial showing on the Golf Channel and Fox Sports, the Magic Twanger Putter Challenge (NO LONGER IN PRODUCTION) was held to evaluate the difference between conventional putting and sidesaddle.

The participants were two average golfers and a scratch player.
They were asked to putt 10 white balls with their regular putter using the conventional method. 5 from 30 feet and 5 from 15 feet. Then they hit 10 more putts from the same distances with yellow balls using the sidedaddle technique. Remember, these golfers had never tried such a radical change in their putting technique before this experiment. They were only given a brief lesson in the proper setup. Your results will be even better with practice.
| LOOK AT THESE AMAZING RESULTS... |
| Justin's putts... one of the average golfers... were 37% closer over his regular putting technique. |
Kimberly, the other recreational player improved by a remarkable 63% |
The scratch golfer, Alan, improved by 10% which is substantial for a player of his caliber since it would reduce his putts per round by 2 or 3... enough to make it on the professional tour. |
NOTE: This is the putter that was used by Dr. Gideon Ariel of Illinois University for the computer study that proved the sidesaddle technique to be 68%+ more accurate than the conventional putting method.

"SLAM DUNK" PUTTING SURVEY COMPLETED 10/01/06
| 100% IMPROVED FROM 1.8 TO 5.4 FEWER PUTTS! |
| AVERAGE FEWER PUTTS PER ROUND= 3.5 |
Another survey of those who use the sidesaddle technique reveals:
12% are PGA touring or teaching professionals.
81% have college degrees.
48% did or now have single digit handicaps.
17% were or are now scratch or better.

| Someday you will realize... hopefully before you have invested in a large putter collection... that all those high-tech putters won't help a bit with the inferior, conventional technique. |

The Magic
of the
PENDULUM
It's about that silky smooth stroke with gradual acceleration that starts the ball tracking on line and end-over-end that is so difficult to achieve with a conventional stance.
| This elusive skill is embedded in the sidesaddle technique and will hold up even under pressure. |

| Annika Sorenstam's celebrated coaches; Pia Nilson and Lynn Marriot have nailed the conventional putting problem on the nose as follows... |
| "How many times do you stand behind a putt, make a decision on the line and speed, and then when you get over the ball, decide that you are seeing the putt differently and change the line?" |
| "When you stand behind a putt, you are looking at it straight on, with shoulders square to the hole." "Your head is level and your are sensing the break as it actually is." Compare this body posture to the way you are when you get over the ball to putt it." "You are hunched over, standing sideways to the hole and, to look at the target you have to turn your head and squint cockeyed at it." "Do you honestly think that you are sensing the break of the putt accurately from a position such as this." "Why would you ever trust what you are seeing from this position over what you see when you are standing behind the ball with your eyes and body - and mind! - square to the hole?" |
| ~Pia Nilson and Lynn Marriot: "Every Shot Must Have a Purpose" Page 116. |
| "Wouldn't it be great if we could simply putt from the same position we were in when we read the putt?' "It would even be better if we could make the stroke without being hunched over at a right angle to the putting line." "Better still, what if we didn't have to look at the line cockeyed and have to try to keep the putter face square with two hands that want to go in different directions?" "Don't you also get the feeling that you could judge the pace of the putt better looking straight down the line?" |
| "How much better a putter would you be if you were allowed to do that?" |
| "Wouldn't you change to that putting style today if it were legal?" |
| Well, it is legal and for some mysterious reason you will likely try and find some reason not to do it so as to not seem different from the mindless flock. |

| Although it is possible to use a conventional putter for sidesaddle, a model designed for this technique will improve results dramatically. |
| Obviously, a conventional length shaft is too short and will cause you to bend over too far and restrict proper stroke motion. |
| Long "broomstick" putters are usually too long with too flat a lie angle and the mid-grip is not far enough down the shaft. |
| The heads and shafting properties are not designed for best results on any of them. |
| When I first published this site, there were no commercially manufactured sidesaddle putters on the market. Now there are dozens but none of them have all the attributes I have found to be beneficial for the best results. One of the most important... ERGONOMICALLY CORRECT SHAFTING ... cannot be found on any of them except "AUT-O-SIGHT" sidesaddle model |
| The reverse shaft not only puts the shaft further away from your leg so you won't feel you will hit it during the stroke, it also places your stroke hand directly over the center of the putter head which improves feel and accuracy. Also, when the shaft bends back over the putter head, it greatly reduces torque on off center hits. |

| Make more putts if you think you have the guts! |
| Use the natural technique that will change the way you think about this little |
The Evidence in Favor of this Putting Method is Simply
| too Overwhelming to Ignore. |
This scientifically proven (and accepted by all who know) as the simplest and most accurate (legal) putting technique ever used is still being overlooked and/or misunderstood by most golfers.
It seems so ugly to many golfers that they are willing to sacrifice career best putting rounds just to avoid what they perceive as looking silly using it.
In reality, it's a more logical & aestheticly pleasing setup than conventional... it only looks different.
Just hand a kid a putter who has never putted before and watch how he holds it without instruction. If you let him alone he would out putt you by Tuesday.
Even the most critical observer must admit that it not only looks like it would be easier, more accurate and natural... IT IS... and it has been proven and documented over and over for more than 150 years.

According to the
&
....
Were still pretty lousy golfers
The average 18-hole score on a full-size course is 97 for men and 114 for women. It's an even 100 for all golfers. The average golf score has changed very little over the last 50 years, despite all the significant advances in equipment technology. Only a very small elite break 80 on a consistent basis.
One fundamental reason is that most golf teachers have complicated the swing beyond measure.
Natural instinct for the full swing is all but forgotten.
The conventional putting technique is an inefficient dogma steeped in century old tradition.
But there is one way you can lower your scores right now and save a lot of time and money at the same time.
You can do it quickly, easily and dramatically by simply using a little common sense.
You may never posses all of the other skills necessary to win the club championship without a lot of practice, but I can show you how to consistantly win putting tournaments with little or no practice at all.
I have spent over 50 years examining and testing putting techniques from croquet to one-handed.
Over all those years, the superiority of this technique has never been challenged for simplicity and accuracy.
Both the science and the simplicity of implementation are indisputable...
...if not self evident.
INSTANTLY Switch to the Purest Putting Stroke the Human Body is Capable of Making...
...combined with the body and head position that is the easiest from which to determine pace and direction...
...and you already know how to do it!
It's easy to liberate yourself from the awkward and difficult constraints imposed by conventional techniques. Make putting the best and most enjoyable part of your game. All you need to do is...
...JUST CHOOSE TO DO IT!

You'll Never Be the Best Putter You Can Be If You Don't.

Conventional putting simply can't hold up to it.
If you think these claims are too good to be true...
just prove it to yourself!
Expert putting is all about how to
"MAKE"
every putt go on your intended line with the exact pace you choose.
How many more putts would you be able to "HOLE"
if you could do that?

The "Claw" grip, split grip, left hand low, putting left handed, long putters, belly putters, etc., etc., are Band-Aid efforts to correct inconsistent putting strokes instead of taking advantage of the problems source.
Most, if not all putting stroke problems stem from the right hand wanting to take over combined with the "hit reflex" that makes it nearly impossible to release the putter head properly.
Maybe, just maybe your eyes, mind and body are telling you the right hand should be taking over... it's only natural after all!
